Ulster Rugby

playing rugby

Ulster Rugby is one the four professional Irish rugby teams. It is part IRFU Ulster Branch. The team competes in both the Heineken Champions Cup (United Rugby Championship) and the Ulster Rugby Championship. It plays home games at the Kingspan Stadium in Belfast.

Ulster has seen its fair share success. It is no accident that the province currently ranks second in the Irish conference. Over the past few decades, however, the club has seen a slowdown. However, it does not mean there are no signs of improvement for the next season. Nevertheless, the province is expected to struggle for the Champions Cup next season.

Ulster enjoyed a golden era in 2000s when they won their first Celtic League title (2005-05) and were the first Irish province in 1999 to win Heineken Champions Cup. They finished first in the Pro12 table 2012, which was their first European competition. They finished second in the Heineken Champions Cup 2011 and beat Toulouse and Saracens.

The club finished in second place in Celtic League's 2003-2004 season. Toulouse knocked them out of the Champions Cup at the group stage. This ended their unbeaten streak in this competition for three years.

The 2006-07 season saw a decline in the fortunes of the club. After a defeat of Gloucester 32-14, Mark McCall was forced to resign as head coach. David Humphreys, the club’s director of Rugby, also retired. David Humphreys, who had left the province, took over a similar position at Gloucester.

2009-10 saw a major overhaul in the team's management. Mark McCall (former Ulster captain) was appointed to succeed Alan Solomons. As assistant coach, Jeremy Davidson was named. Les Kiss was appointed as the new director of rugby. Dan Tuohy signed from Exeter.

The team made a remarkable turnaround in 2010-11. Neil Doak took over as the head coach from Alan Solomons. Ulster won 13 of their first 14 games, and qualified for the quarter-finals of the Heineken Cup. Unfortunately, they were defeated at Twickenham by Leinster.

Despite their poor performance, the Ulster players demonstrated their dedication to the cause. They were led by Justin Harrison, an Australian lock, and Isaac Boss (a New Zealand-born Irish scrumhalf). Both of these players were named the Player of Year. Roger Wilson and John Cooney also received the honor. But the club suffered a major setback when centre Nevin Spence died in an accident. The club lost several other players, including the out-half Ian Humphreys and Rob Herring, who both went to London Irish.

After a disappointing 2008-09 season, the club began a turnaround. Despite losing to La Rochelle in the opening game of the season they won their next five fixtures, including a victory against Scarlets by 27-16. They made it to the semi-finals at the Celtic League.
